A selection of more than one thousand albums/recordings I consider essential, from 1923 to the present. Click the decade link to view the whole decade in one page or click the single year.

New! View it in Google Sheets.

The lists:

Notes about the lists:

  • This is a work in progress.
  • The lists are focused on rock music, including roots and derivative genres. So they cover other genres as well, even if not extensively, in those cases where the content is considered influential for rock music.
  • The first section (Early blues, jazz, folk and rock ‘n’ roll) includes mostly compilations. The other lists include albums only, although there are few exceptions.
  • They include 10 main albums per year (at least starting from 1964) plus a variable number of notable albums listed after (I’m more “generous” in the last decade). The release date is reported between the parenthesis and the albums are sorted by that date, unless specification indicates otherwise.
  • Straight blues is covered more extensively here: Blues recordings selection.
  • The following acronyms are used to identify some minority genres or nationalities:

Silver Rider

4th song from the album The Great Destroyer (25-Jan-2005)
by Low

Traduzione in italiano a cura di mazapegul:

A volte ti vedo
Silver Rider [1]

Silver Rider
A volte la tua voce non è abbastanza

La la la la la

[1] Silver Rider allude presumibilmente a Silver Surfer, il personaggio della Comic Marvel.

Original Lyrics:

At times I see you
You Silver Rider
Sometimes your voice is not enough

Your face in windows
Outside forever
Nobody dreamed you’d save the world
Nobody dreamed you’d save the world

La la la la la

The march is over
The great destroyer
She passes through you like a knife

Oh take me with you
You silver rider
Sometimes your voice is not enough
Sometimes your voice is not enough

La la la la la

Strange Days (Giorni Strani)

1st song from the album Strange Days (25-Sep-1967)
Lyrics by Jim Morrison, music by The Doors

Traduzione in italiano a cura di mazapegul:

Giorni strani ci hanno trovato
Giorni strani ci hanno rintracciato
Distruggeranno le nostre gioie occasionali
Dovremmo continuare a giocare
O cercare una nuova città

Occhi strani riempiono strane stanze
Voci indicheranno la loro stanca fine
La padrona di casa ridacchia
I sui ospiti sono addormentati dal peccato
Ascoltami parlare di peccato
E capisci che è finita

Giorni strani ci hanno trovato
E attraverso le loro strane ore
Ci tratteniamo in solitudine
Corpi confusi
Ricordi maltrattati
Come corriamo via dal giorno
Verso una strana notte di pietra

Testo originale:

Strange days have found us
Strange days have tracked us down
They’re going to destroy
Our casual joys
We shall go on playing
Or find a new town

Strange eyes fill strange rooms
Voices will signal their tired end
The hostess is grinning
Her guests sleep from sinning
Hear me talk of sin
And you know this is it

Strange days have found us
And through their strange hours
We linger alone
Bodies confused
Memories misused
As we run from the day
To a strange night of stone
